Before and After: Cedar Chest

before3before

Most of the things that live in our house are either thrifted, handmade or gifts. Rarely do George and I buy any home goods full price. We both grew up on the low end of a middle class households. When I was little, my mom made all of my clothes and George grew up in the country (’nuff said), so the DIY attitude has been engrained in us.
before2We thrifted the chest above to use for George’s t-shirts. He has amassed quite the collection since he began working for a clothing company– one of the perks! We knew that Lane Cedar Chests are good quality, but the finish was in bad shape. We thought it might be fun to paint the chest instead of staining the wood. I really liked the bones of this piece, just not the surface. So, instead we sanded it down, primed it and painted it. (We didn’t paint the inside, of course. Cedar smells too good!)

We decided to highlight the different panels of the chest by using a different color. I love the color combination of grey and yellow. Although, I did make poor George go to the paint store multiple times to get the right shade of grey. Grey is such a hard color to get right!

After! Here’s the after shot! TA-DA! It’s amazing what a little paint can do.

DIY Dolce and Gabbana Floral Sunnies

DSC_1009

Do you ever see something you want and you just can’t get it out of your head? That is how I felt about these sunglasses. It was irrational, but I after seeing them on Pinterest could not stop! I was a mad (and broke) woman desperate for a pair of Dolce and Gabana sunglasses. Knowing that my bank account & I are not friends, I decided to break out my trusty glue gun and get to craftin’!

I’m super pleased about how this DIY turned out. It was super easy & so, so cheap!

Step 1: Break out your supplies. You will need a pair of sunglasses (I found mine at the Dollar Store), a hot glue gun, rosettes, scissors and spray paint (optional).

Step 2: (optional) I loved the look of the black flowers so I spray painted them. You could leave the flowers as is for a more colorful look. You’ll notice I enlisted the help of George for this one. He is way better at spray painting than I am. He also had the brilliant idea to tape the flowers to a piece of cardboard, so they didn’t roll around during the spraying process.

Step 3: Let the rosettes dry & heat up your glue gun. I also cut some of the “leaves” off the rosettes to place them closer together, but that is an optional step.

Step 4: Working your way inward, place a small dot of glue on the sunglasses. Put rosette into the glue and hold for 10 seconds or until cool.

Step 5: (optional) Hit the beach in your fabulous new sunnies! You’re a doll!

Books and Looks: A Look Inspired by Weetzie Bat

DSC_0981weetziebat DSC_0979

Jacket: Valentine’s gift from George; Pants: vintage; Scarf: Free People; Moccasins: Minnetonka; Belt: vintage

I want to get back into posting outfits again. It is so easy to just put on a giant grandma sweater and go to work. My lack of enthusiasm for dressing lately made me think: “What am I enthusiastic about?” And the answer is books. So I thought it might be fun to combine something I’m not so crazy for with something I am crazy for and create “looks inspired by books.”

Most recently I’ve been reading the YA cult-classic, Weetzie Bat. I have to be honest with ya’ll, I didn’t love Weetzie. In fact, I’ve read other Francesca Lia Block books before and I didn’t like those either. I think the plot moves too fast and there isn’t enough dialog. But Block’s books do have plenty of rich description– and Weetzie Bat is no exception.

My look is inspired by not just the main character, Weetzie, but also inspired by her best friend, Dirk, and the city they love, Los Angeles.

What inspires you?

Love Style: Derby Day

Is it silly to get dressed up to watch a two minute horse race on tv? Yes, probably. But sometimes I need an excuse to wear a large hat.

I had big plans to make my own fabulous hat, and of course, share the details with you all. But I had bigger fish to fry. No really, I had to make lunch for George and myself.

Oh well. I can only do so much.

Did you watch the Kentucky Derby on Saturday? Did you dress up? If so, I’d love to see your outfit!

Sweater: Vintage
Skirt: Anthropologie
Belt: Vintage
Hat: Target
Bow on Hat: American Apparel
Shoes: Target
Earrings: Vintage

P.S. I’ve updated the photos. Do the colors look dull to you? I think it may be a mac vs. PC thing, but I don’t know. Anyone else have problems with the colors changing after uploading the photos?

J. Crew I love you, but you’re bringing me down.

I have an unhealthy love of J. Crew. I’d die happy (and fashionable) if my entire wardrobe was J. Crew sweater sets and ballet flats.

So when I noticed that the new J. Crew Style Guide arrived in my mailbox on Monday, I tore through the pages of the book before I even ripped open my birthday card– sorry, Grandma.

But when I turned the last glossy page, I was left with a feeling of utter disappointment.

The style was impeccable. The clothes were colorful and gorgeous. But all I could think about was: “why are there no ‘real’ women models?”

If you haven’t seen the style guide yet, in the Men’s section of the book, “real” men are modeling the majority of the clothes. No doubt, the “real” men are not your everyday Joe Schmo. The “real” men are hip investment bankers and restauranteurs, wear no socks with their sandals, and they are all gorgeous. But the women’s section didn’t have a “real” woman in sight. All models.

Model and Restaurateur, Michael Chernow.

I know J. Crew has a history of sometimes using real people as models and I appreciate it. It’s better than most companies. But the contrast between the men and women’s sections of the catalog was unsettling.

Are real women not hip enough? Do we not have interesting jobs? Do we not occasionally go sock-less? Are we not gorgeous?

I know this is barely grazing the tip of the iceberg. This could be an entire novel about the fashion industry and body image and women, but I think it is high time we started bringing real women into the picture.

What do you all think?

Love Cats

On the same day I wore my cat skirt, a friendly and hungry kittie wandered up to our apartment. Coincidence?  I think not.

We are calling her (or him) Moonshine.

She enjoys deli turkey, warm places to hide, and under-the-chin scratching– just like me.

I hope Moonshine has a lovely family, but I won’t mind if she sticks around our apartment for a while.

Long live cat ladies.

Love Stripes

I’m constantly trying to improve and grow. This year, I’m trying to make a conscious effort to improve my self-confidence in all aspects of my life. In the past six months or so, I’ve improved my culinary skills and I’m currently working on trying to improve my style. I love fashion, but I often feel that because I’m short in height and short on cash, I can’t wear cute clothes. But I’m out to prove myself wrong. I also want to prove that librarians can and do have good style.

I wore this outfit to brunch in Asheville. I love Asheville so much. You could literally wear a paper bag and no one would judge you.

Pants: Vintage Pendleton
Sweater: Can’t remember! eep! Edit: I remembered! United Colors of Benetton.
Shoes: Target
Bag: Gift from my sister

How do you improve your self-confidence?

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills!

Y’all. I feel like a total lunatic. I said I wasn’t going to write about my wedding anymore, but here I am. I have to stop taking crazy pills. But I feel the need to share.

I had a little bit of what us southern ladies like to call a “moment” tonight when I tried on my wedding dress. I haven’t tried it on in months and for the first time I had some serious doubts about it. Not doubts about the marriage, but doubts about the dress. It’s the only thing I have bought, hell, it is the only plans I have made. But I’m seriously doubting the dress now. (I.E.: Is this really how I want to look? And does this make me look frumpy?!) I don’t know if the seed of  doubt was planted in my brain long ago by my mom and my sister (who were rather unenthusiastic about the dress) or if I am just plain indecisive.

Crappy iPhone picture aside, what do you all think? It’s vintage, of course. I originally wanted to tailor the neckline down a bit, cut the sleeves to my elbows and add a thin gold belt. I just added the black for show. But is it special enough?

love,
the indecisive librarian, melanie
