Little Projects

New doors and puppy snugglesSometimes it’s the little projects that are the most difficult to complete. You think, “Oh, that’ll just take a minute, I’ll do it later.” And then the little projects add up into a big honkin’ project. We’ve been trying to knock some little to-dos out lately, but our list doesn’t seem to get shorter. In fact, it seems to keep getting longer! That’s life, right? Anyway, I thought I’d update you on some little projects that we’ve recently accomplished. Continue reading

Airstream Living Update: 1 & 1/2 Years

IMG_0681We’ve been living in the Airstream for a year and a half now. Whuuuuutttt. Some days it feels as if we’ve lived there forever and other days it feels like we just moved in yesterday. But that’s what life is like, am I right? We’ve now got our routines down and our lives seem very “normal” for living in 188 square feet.

IMG_0645 IMG_0643 IMG_0582I do have to admit, old man winter is not my favorite person right now. Staying warm in an Airstream can be a challenge. (Read more about how we stay warm here.) When it’s cold outside, I just want to hibernate, but it is so important for my sanity to get out and go places and do things. The struggle is real.

IMG_0585We did get a blessed glimpse of spring this past weekend and I feel renewed. I’m so ready for working in my garden and long hikes in the woods and cooking on our fire pit! All that snow was pretty, but I’m ready for you, spring.

Are you seeing glimpses of spring in your neck of the woods? Let me know in the comments!

Airstream Livin’: Nine Months Update

Trying to keep the day we purchased the Airstream in my mind.

Trying to keep the day we purchased the Airstream in my mind.

It’s been about nine months living in the Airstream full-time. I love our little tin can, but I have to admit there are days when it is really, really hard. I’m under quite a bit of stress at work to finish up projects before the summer and it’s easy to bring that stress home with me.

A small space gets more cluttered more quickly and the cooking area just never seems big enough. George has been working super hard to take on more commissions and I am super proud of him. But that also means that he has less time to help out around the ol’ Stream. I have so many dreams and goals for this blog, the Airstream and my life, but sometimes they seem too far out of my reach.

I know things will look up. It’s almost the summer time, my work will lighten up, there will be beach trips and time to get organized. There will be time to live those dreams, to grow something with my own hands, to grow this blog and to spend time with the people I love.

I don’t regret one minute of our journey in the Airstream, it’s just a rough patch. I still love the ol’ girl and I know we’ll get through this together.

Airstream Living: An Update

Airstream It’s been almost two months since George and I have moved into the Airstream. Full-time Airstream livin’ has presented some challenges, but the livin’ is easy. (Are you singing that song in your head now?)

The biggest challenge hasn’t been the lack of space, which totally surprised me. I thought George and I would be fighting over territory at this point. Putting tape down the middle of the room, old school style. But luckily, we thought ahead and built lots of storage options into our redesign.

The biggest challenge has actually been that it’s hard to multitask in the Airstream. When I am making my breakfast in the morning, I can’t have the hot water heater on at the same time or the burner will click off. Then, when I’m done cooking, I have to click the water heater back on and wait for it to heat up. It’s been a lesson in patience, fo’ sho’.

Another challenge we’ve been presented with is the bugs. I naively didn’t expect bugs. Even though we live in the woods. Right there with nature. Amongst the trees. Now that fall is making it’s beautiful arrival, the bugs are diminishing, but we’ve been on the war path for the last couple months.

Most of all, I’ve loved how easy living in the Airstream makes it to save money. We have no rent, so I’ve been saving at least $1,000 each month. Our high rent was crippling our savings. I nick-named our savings Tiny Tim, it was so bad/sad. After our wedding last December, we were pretty much wiped out. (Although we were totally realistic and only spent a fraction of what the average wedding cost!) But nothing makes it easier to save than having no living expenses.

We’ve still got some cosmetic things to do before I share the interior of the Airstream, but I can’t wait for you all to see the before and after. It.is.so.good.

Airstream Update

To do list

We’ve been in the Airstream about a week now. In some ways it has been seeing a dream come true. In other ways it is the never-ending project. I’ve been super impressed about the progress we’ve made in only two and a half months. But I also made another dreaded to-do list and the projects seem never ending. We found a lot of things we needed to fix once we moved in. The hot water is (still) stinky. When we first turned the hot water on, it smelled like a dead possum. I literally gagged. Now it just smells like a dead baby possum– i.e. slightly less smelly. And we’ve of course, got some beautification projects to do. I think I just need to accept that this will be an ongoing project. Maybe ongoing forever. But that’s ok. Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, right?

What did you all get up to this weekend?
